Toilcam (TOILer CAMeroon)

TOILer CAMeroon (TOILCAM) came about because “He” believed in hard work, so he changed the name of his chain of stores to the iconic TOILCAM. The brand in itself represents TRUST!

Pa Nkweteyim left M’muock Fosimondi in the early 1950s for Fako Division. His first job was at the Presbyterian Bookshop in Limbe. He would later resign, buy himself a typewriter, move to Buea, and begin a solo career as a typist. In the meantime, and in 1956, he got a temporary job as a Clerical Assistant at the Surveys Department of Southern Cameroons, then the Ministry of Justice Yaounde.

Fast Forward, he was subsequently transferred, in 1967, to work as a Translator in the Judicial Department Buea, West Cameroon. Although Papa was good at his job, he had passion for Business. He set up a display case for provisions in front of his Clerks Quarter residence. He sold these provisions after work and during his spare time. This would later grow big and in 1970 he opened a provision store called Protein Store in Small Soppo Woganga. He equally established the Shell Service Station, now MRS, at Bongo Square Buea in 1972. His beloved wife, our mother, Matilda Nkweteyim, was the Managing Director of his businesses. It should be noted that at that time, that is the days of President Ahmadu Ahidjo, one could not be a civil servant and engage in business. Since his businesses were generating more money than his job, he decided to resign from the Civil Service in 1972 and he became a full-time entrepreneur.

Business Life

With enough time and liberty to do business, Protein Store grew big and became a Departmental Store with branches in Tole, Church Street Victoria and Buea Road Mutengene and ENAP Entrance in Lower Farms Buea. Pa Nkweteyim believed in hard work (and that he must be a TOILer to succeed) and so he changed the name of his chain of stores to the iconic TOILCAM (TOILer CAMeroon) STORES. This is what earned him the name Pa Toilcam. He was a general merchant, manufacturer’s representative, importer, and dealer in general goods, with specialty in provisions, all types of gas cooker and refrigerator, and whole sale distribution of cosmetics produced in Douala.

He had a van with which he transported goods which he supplied to various towns of the Southwest Region including as far and as remote a place as Ekondo Titi in the Ndian Division of those days. A change in Government policies and the challenges in managing all these branches caused him to close all and concentrate on and the Supermarket at ENAP Entrance and SHELL where the selling of fuel and servicing of vehicles were done. Shell service station also served as the exhibition venue for the gas cookers and refrigerators that he sold. His diligence and success in business brought him to the limelight and he fraternized well with the high and mighty of the land.

P.O Box 1 Buea

When private mail boxes were established at the post office, the Paramount Chief then, who had been contacted to take Box 1, was honest and kind enough to say Pa Toilcam was more deserving of it. That is how P.O. Box 1 became the family’s permanent mail box. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Pa Toilcam was forced to let go of Shell in the 1980s. He also began to gradually withdraw from active business in the late 1990s. To prepare for retirement he ventured into animal husbandry and farming. He reared pigs, chickens and later rabbits, for commercial purposes.

The relaunch and rebranding of Toilcam is a Tribute by the Family to Pa and Ma Toilcam, as they were fondly called.
